Mei Ling Marzonie is an award winning Asian-American-adoptee filmmaker from Michigan and graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Film & TV fall of 2023. Marzonie now resides in Los Angeles, CA on the east side in hipster town of Silverlake.

Professionally, she has pursued film and television-related work at Tremolo Productions, Gunpowder & Sky, Speakeasy Pictures, Camera Ambassador, and as a freelance general crew member on union and non-union productions.

Starting film production at her high school and receiving an Emmy for Best High School Director from the National Academy of Television and Science for her short feature The High Road (2019), it was Marzonie’s decision that her passion in film making and telling stories of the under-represented is a medium that will continue to evolve and connect with other like-minded and creative individuals.

Throughout childhood and adolescence, Marzonie grew up in a predominantly white and middle-eastern community. On top of that being an Asian American Adoptee with parents of a different race, Marzonie brings a unique perspective to visual storytelling, one that is deeply rooted in empathy and a commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.

This ethos is evident in her documentary, The Future of Fashion for All: Creating Safe Spaces, which has garnered recognition at esteemed festivals such as the LA Independent Women Film Awards, Bridge Fest, and Golden State Film Festival which will be selected to screen at the TCL Chinese Theater at the end of February 2024. See entire list of awards and accolades below

Marzonie believes that many of the beautiful stories that we are so desperately trying to create for the narrative short films and/or feature-length films are the ones right in front of us - it is the people around us, we just need to listen.

"The world breaks everyone, then some become strong in broken places."

- Ernest Hemingway

Creative Process

With a keen cinematic vision, Mei Ling Marzonie crafts compelling narratives and documentaries that spotlight and uplift underrepresented and marginalized communities.

I firmly believe that delving deep into the intricacies of human nature informs how we bring stories to life on screen, fostering connections and empathy that resonate deeply with audiences.

It's about creating a moment where viewers can truly see themselves reflected and heard.

In collaboration with clients, fellow creatives, or collaborators, my approach begins by uncovering the essence of the story. This often requires a willingness to be open and vulnerable, exploring the underlying themes and messages driving the project. In this exploration, art emerges as a powerful tool for healing and transformation.

Ultimately, creating a safe and inclusive workspace is paramount.

Once the core of the narrative is established, I dive into the logistical and pre-production phases, recognizing that time is indeed money. Together with clients and collaborators, I strive to develop a practical and cost-effective timeline that respects the project's authenticity while ensuring its timely completion and distribution.

  • Scorpio Sun, Capricorn Rising, Aquarius Moon.

  • Honestly this is something that I am still trying to master. Burnout is so common-place in the creative industry. It happens to everyone. It happened to me in Chicago. Set good boundaries. If you can no longer do said project or event it’s okay to pass it up. Choose projects that you feel solely connected to. Tough to do this in the beginning yes, but down the road you can definitely become more discerning as to what project or gig you want to take on.

  • I always joke that my gate-way-drug movie that got me into films was Requiem for a Dream. Truth to be told I watched this with my past high school boyfriend and was “artfully traumatized”. The film depicted addiction in such a provoking and gritty way in which stuck in my mind ever since. From the soundtrack, editing, writing, I fell in-love with the process of how they were able to create the film. The films that have continued to keep me in this crazy business would have to be Moonrise Kingdom, Moonlight, Ladybird, Everything Everywhere, and American Fiction.
